Um seine Ruhe im heimischen Sumpf wieder zu erlangen, lässt sich das grüne Monstrum Shrek von dem durchtriebenen Fürsten Farquaad überreden, für den feigen Edelmann die liebliche Prinzessin Fiona zu freien, die in einer Schlossruine von einem Drachen bewacht wird. Unterstützung erhält Shrek von einem sprechenden Esel, der in der Gefahr zum Freund wird.

Shrek is an ogre, a green monster who lives alone in a swamp. His fellow creatures shun him. But that changes when Lord Farquaad banishes all mythical creatures from his kingdom, and they seek refuge—of all places—in Shrek’s swamp. Shrek, who wants his peace and quiet back, strikes a deal with the lord: if he manages to rescue the beautiful Princess Fiona from the clutches of a dragon, the ogre can have his swamp all to himself again.
