Die alleinstehende Ansa führt in Helsinki ein unaufregendes Leben; in einem Supermarkt füllt sie die Regale auf und sortiert wiederverwendbares Plastik aus. Sie lernt den Arbeiter Holappa kennen, vom Leben enttäuscht und dem Alkohol zugetan. Nach und nach finden die beiden zusammen, aller Widrigkeiten und Hindernisse zum Trotz. Beiden ist klar, dass diese unerwartete Liebe nur dann eine Zukunft haben kann, wenn Holappa seine Sucht in den Griff kriegt.

FALLEN LEAVES tells the story of two lonely people (Alma Pöysti and Jussi Vatanen) who meet by chance in Helsinki at night. Both are in search of the first, only and final love of their lives. The path to this honorable goal is complicated by the man's alcoholism, lost phone numbers, not knowing each other's names and addresses - and last but not least, life's general tendency to put obstacles in the way of those seeking happiness. This gentle tragicomedy, already considered lost, can be considered the "fourth part" of Aki Kaurismäki's working-class trilogy (Shadows in Paradise, Ariel and The Girl from the Match Factory).
