Im Jahr 1947 wird die Leiche des vom Land nach Los Angeles gezogenen Sternchen Elizabeth Short, genannt "Die Schwarze Dahlie", auf einem unbebauten Grundstück gefunden - zweigeteilt, entleibt, das Gesicht zu einer grotesken Maske verformt. Die befreundeten Cops Bucky Bleichert und Lee Blanchard, beide ehemalige Boxer, werden mit dem Fall betraut - und sie lassen sich auf eine Dreiecksaffäre mit dem ehemaligen Liebchen eines Gangsters ein. Als Bleichert sich auch noch in ein reiches Mädchen verliebt, das die Dahlie kannte, sticht er ahnungslos in ein Wespennest.
