Three Thousand Years of Longing

Alithea, die Bücher und Märchen liebt, entdeckt auf einem Bazar in Istanbul, wo sie an einer Konferenz teilnimmt, eine alte Glasflasche. Tatsächlich taucht daraus ein Dschinn auf, der ihr wie im Märchen drei Wünsche im Tausch für seine Freiheit anbietet. Er beginnt ihr Geschichten von Abenteuern und Liebe zu erzählen und nimmt sie für sich ein. Schließlich spricht Alithea einen Wunsch aus.

Dr. Alithea Binnie (Tilda Swinton) lives contentedly surrounded by books and myths. A conference takes her to Istanbul. While visiting the bazaar, she discovers an old glass bottle. Back at her hotel, Alithea watches in amazement as a djinn (Idris Elba) escapes from the jar. And just as in the lore, the genie offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom. But Alithea hesitates. With stories of his life and times long past, of adventures and loves, the genie tries to win her over. Touched by his experiences, Alithea finally makes a wish that will change both their lives forever...
